Bandits sign Atkin - he will make his debut on May 24th vs. Scunthorpe

Berwick Bandits are due to have another new face in their line up come next Saturday’s (May 24th) home match vs. Scunthorpe Scorpions when Tony Atkin finally makes in into Bandit’s colours.

It’s been no secret that 42-year-old Atkin would have accepted a place at Berwick for over two years, but up until now the circumstances have not been right.

The Wrexham-born racer has a reputation for thrill-a-minute speedway, and on the big circuit at Shielfield Park has put in some of his most spectacular action, piling up the points against Berwick.

But after this season’s tragic circumstances at Atkin’s home for may years, Newport, as the driving force behind the Wasps, promoter Tim Stone sadly passed away last month, their operations have been suspended until such a time that the Wasps can fly again with new faces at the helm leaving Atkin free to move elsewhere for this season, and Berwick will now be fortunate enough to enjoy his vast experience.

Berwick Promoter Peter Waite said: “We would have loved to have Tony in our side years ago, but now we can and we all know that means more points for the Bandits, scored in the most exciting of fashions.

“This rider is a true entertainer who thrives on sheer determination to do well and that’s exactly what we need in our side, so when Tony makes his Berwick debut next weekend, we know we’re in for some fun!”

Atkin is a rider with huge experience who began riding speedway at the Ellesmere Port training school, when he was 15 and also took part in the Stoke schools too.

His motorcycle experience also extends to World long track, and grass track at 350 and 500cc level.

His speedway debut was made for Stoke vs. Milton Keynes on May 24th, 1986.

He has also ridden at Elite level for Wolverhampton (debut at Ipswich March 24th 1994) Bradford and Sheffield.

Newport has been his settlement for a good number of years and adored it, and hopefully he can be just as happy in the Borders!
