Anderson’s Quality Butchers Berwick Bandits 42(80)
Edinburgh Scotwaste Monarchs 51(105)
(Premier League Knockout
Cup – 1st round / 2nd leg)
16 points down after the first leg incredibly extended to a
25 point aggregate defeat as Edinburgh
sent the Bandits packing from this year’s Knockout Cup.
On a night where Edinburgh
displayed good strength in the Bandit’s were depleted from the off, and with
notable holes in their scoring they were on a hiding to nothing.
Adrian Rymel was still away on European Championship duty
and the rider replacement rule netted only four points to cover his usual 12
plus, whist Berwick were again without the freshly injured Guglielmo
Franchetti.
The Italian crashed at Edinburgh
re-breaking his collar bone at the track he originally broke it in March,
ruling him out of action for a good number of weeks.
To cover his absence, Bandit’s boss Peter Waite had booked
in Ben Powell of Newcastle
to deputise, but Powell broke down en route at Tadcaster with no chance of
arrival, the plan was changed and young John Macphail was drafted in, but was
well out of his depth.
On the bright side, Adam McKinna at last showed the form
that Waite had signing him for with a good set of five rides, three of which
gave him good scores and indeed a win in Heat Two.
HEAT ONE: had to be re run as Sneddon fell heavily on the
third bend of lap one, stopping the heat with his exclusion and a big tear in
his kevlars. In the re run Fisher shot out to lead well on bend one with Magosi
making a good chase of it later on in the race (3-3 / 3-3 / 41-57).
HEAT TWO: saw McKinna make the first of several excellent
gate on machinery completely re-built by his father Kenny through the week and
with the added power he held on to his lead beautifully to win over Aarnio, who
joined him up front on the second bend. Tully’s effort in getting back on terms
with them was excellent. (5-1 / 8-4 / 46-58).
HEAT THREE: with the two Monarchs well out of the gate and
leading well Bager put in a brief and sadly ineffectual chase for a lap before
dropping back in a reversed maximum levelling the match (1-5 / 9-9 / 47-63).
HEAT FOUR: also needed to be re run after initially McKinna
was well way with Makovsky joining him at the head of the race, but the Czech
took bend three too high on the banking and fell and was excluded. In the
re-run McKinna made a cracking gate but was caught and passed by Wethers off
bend two on that opening lap (2-4 / 11-13 / 49-67).
HEAT FIVE: was a huge win for Edinburgh’s Fisher with
Sneddon going round Bager on bend two to remain unchallenged for the away
maximum (5-1 / 12-18 / 50-72).
HEAT SIX: provided a fine gate for Wethers, but Magosi went
round him on the second bend with Aarnio settled in third but Wethers wasn’t
giving up and he attempted some excellent moves inside and out succeeding in a
masterful pass on the fourth bend of lap three (3-3 / 15-21 / 53-75).
HEAT SEVEN: nearly left Jonasson out of it as he just
managed to change his bike with seconds of the time allowance left and made it
to the tapes, but Lawson jumped the gate and it was all called back for a four
man restart. In that re-run Makovsky was well away with Aarnio passing Lawson
for second place on the second bend (5-1 / 20-22 / 58-76).
HEAT EIGHT: and Magosi made a wild gate and went round
Summers to lead well. McKinna sadly could not make better than last this time
round (3-3 / 23-25 / 61-79).
HEAT NINE: and it was the visiting pairing who hammered
Bager and Macphail into the ground (1-5 / 24-30 / 62-84).
HEAT 10: provided an unexpected poor race from Magosi at the
back with Lawson passing Aarnio earlier on in another away maximum (1-5 / 25-35
/ 63-89).
HEAT 11: put Makovsky in the black and white for double
points and he had to work for it with Sneddon and Fisher first out of the gate,
but the Czech powered-up hot on Sneddon’s trail, passing him on the third bend
of the second lap, and then shot magnificently round Fisher on bend two of the
last lap resulting in much genuine hand shaking and congratulations from both
(6-3 / 31-38 / 69-92).
HEAT 12: started with another excellent gate from McKinna,
but a better one from Tully who led, Lawson, at the back pissed Bager on the
fourth bend of the last lap and nearly shot up along side McKinna (2-4 / 33-42
/ 71-96).
HEAT 13: saw both Bandits shoot off the gated to lead but
Wethers was closing all the way and passed Magosi on the opening bend on the
last lap. (4-2 / 37-44 / 75-98).
HEAT 14: opened with Aarnio shooting round Jonasson on bend
two with McKinna in third defending hard against a determined Summers, but lost
out to the Monarch on the last lap (3-3 / 40-47 / 78-101).
HEAT 15: was an immaterial race but Wethers shot
determinedly under Makovsky on bend 2 followed by Fisher who squeezed his way
between the two, but Makovsky came back under Wethers on the fourth bend of lap
two, a heat that ended yet again in a flurry of Fisher / Makovsky handshakes
(2-4 / 42-51 / 87-105).
