Sat 14 Jun 2008: Berwick 61 - 32 Reading

Match Report

“Anderson’s Quality Butchers” Berwick Bandits 61

Reading “M. Collard Waste Management Services Group” Racers 32

(Premier League)

Berwick Bandits’ “Dream Team” took to the track for the first time on Saturday night and demolished a decent Reading team by 29 points, putting the Bandits back into fourth place in the League.

Tero Aarnio returned from injury and looked like he’d never been away with some dramatic passed and high speed sweeps that got the crowd to its feet.

Adrian Rymel’s dominance at Shielfield Park continued as yet again he went unbeaten by a visitor with his paid five-ride maximum, invariably winning his races with a 50 metre lead.

Tony Atkin looked more settled with his number two position, and took two fine wins, the first in Heat six backed up by his skipper in a 5-1, and again in Heat 8 as part of another 5-1 with the Scud Missile, Scott Smith.

Michal Makovsky had a quieter night by his barnstorming standards although warmed up towards the end of the night and also came out of a nasty looking crash unscathed, although he had to complete the meeting on his number two machine.

His fall was the result of a fall by partner Aarnio who went into bend three in Heat Five at a tremendous rate, having passed Lemon on the back straight.

Aarnio had already brought the house down in Heat Three when he shot again at huge speed round the outside of Ostergaard on bend two through an ever-closing gap putting the hearts in the mouths of all the fans present.

Norbert Magosi is a solid, quality scorer now and again weighed in with vital points earning him a Heat 15 appearance.

Paul Clews and Scott Smith must now be considered amongst the strongest of reserve pairings in the entire Premier League with them both displaying a huge determination to score well, and with 14 + 4 coming from the pair they are succeeding, again despite a heavy fall for the former.

In Heat 11 Clews and Mills were behind Lemon, the Bandit right up with the Racer early on, but Lemon lost control on bend 3 falling with Clews laying down heavily close behind leading to Mills’ falling too with all riders thankfully fine.

Lemon had previously come out as a tactical ride for double points in Heat nine and started like a train to lead on bend one with Jamie Smith coming up along side briefly before Aarnio again passed him like a rocket on bend two soon to be followed by Makovsky to reduce the overall damage of the six points scored by the immaculate Lemon.

Ulrich Ostergaard had been sitting pretty on top of the Premier League but his nine points from his five rider may well have dented that, as his usual dominance abandoned him although again was good value for money with his excitement.

Tomas Suchanek suffered a match to forget as he struggled to get to grips with Shielfield in his zero return from four races, a record repeated by young newcomer Nicki Glanz.
