Sun 30 Mar 2008: Mildenhall 29 - 61 Berwick

Match Report

Mildenhall Fen Tigers 29

Andersons Quality Butchers Berwick Bandits 61

 (Premier Trophy)

The Berwick Bandits exploded into life at Mildenhall on Sunday afternoon, beating the home side by a whopping great 32-point victory in the 29-61 score.

The completely unexpected tally, which rocked British Speedway to its core, may well go down in the statistic ledgers as an all time Premier League away record, a fact currently being verified by the authorities.

The amazing result came less that 24 hours after Berwick’s first home win since the summer of 2007 over Glasgow Tigers indicating that after a season in the doldrums the Bandits are roaring back – Premier League beware!

The afternoon also presented visiting Berwick skipper, Adrian Rymel with the West Row Premier League track record of 55.00 seconds, 0.19 better that the previous effort.

Five of the Six Bandits too heat wins, and of the 15 races, a Bandit crossed the chequered an unprecedented 13 times, and young reserve Adam McKinna, whilst not taking a win was paid for a win in Heat 14 by following Tero Aarnio home in a real confidence booster for the lad.

Michal Makovsky played a fine supporting roll, winning his opening two races before following his partner home, protecting their points and the team’s advantage.

None of the Bandits amazingly scored a maximum but there is shows that it’s a team based on overall strength and not one big star standing out which gives much stability.

HEAT ONE – saw Rymel take off like a rocket from the gate to lead well and win untroubled with Magosi surprisingly at the back but weighing up the track to perfection. (3-3 / 3-3)

HEAT TWO – proved Magosi’s first heat had done its job as he performed a Rymel, just without the track record, to win well and with McKinna keeping Cockle at bay to take the first of many Bandits heat advantages as they went two up. (2-4 / 5-7)

HEAT THREE – had the Fen Tiger’s guest, Oliver take the win as Bager and Graversen enjoyed a great battle behind for second place, a reward justly deserved by the successful new Bandit although the home side had levelled it all up once more. (4-2 / 9-9)

HEAT FOUR – presented Berwick with a two point lead again and a first win for Makovsky with McKinna grabbing the vital third placed point over Wortmann who suffered engine failure mid race. (2-4 / 11-13)

HEAT FIVE – gave another win to Rymel in a shared heat preserving Berwick’s slender two point lead. Both Graversen and Baseby managed to get round McKinna. (3-3 / 14-16)

HEAT SIX – again preserved that two point lead over the Fen Tigers (3-3 / 17-19)

HEAT SEVEN – was the big tilt for Berwick as Aarnio shot out to lead with Bager joining him up front keeping Wortmann at bay in a maximum for the visiting Bandits as Baseby fell attempting a pass on the last lap. (1-5 / 18-24)

HEAT EIGHT – put the Bandits another 4 points up with another maximum for a fine win from Magosi, backed up by Makovsky as the home side’s heads dropped dramatically. (1-5 / 19-29)

HEAT NINE – gave Berwick an amazing three maximum heats on the trot. (1-5 / 20-34)

HEAT 10 – continued the maximum thread as Berwick’s new Dane, Bager took his first win for the club, backed up by Aarnio although helped by Laukannen’s tactical ride becoming the victim of his 2-minute penalty for which he went off 15m but could not get back on level terms. (1-5/ 21-39)

HEAT 11 – was the fifth Berwick maximum off the belt won by Rymel with Aarnio tucking in for 2 points and Berwick were scaling the heights at 22-up. (1-5 / 22-44)

HEAT 12 – put Berwick 24 points ahead with a second win for Bager who won his three points after a titanic struggle with Graversen in one of the match’s highlights. (2-4 / 24-48)

HEAT 13 – turned out to be the Fen Tiger’s second and last heat winner as Laukannen dented both Rymel and Makovsky’s maximum tallies as he controlled the race well from the front. (3-3 / 27-51)

HEAT 14 – and Berwick were back at the maximum trail taking another from Aarnio and Scot McKinna who rode well to keep out Baseby at bay as Bandit’s fans the country over sat cracking bottle of bubbly open to celebrate as the good times returned. (1-5 / 28-56)

HEAT 15 – finished off a fine performance with another maximum heat from Rymel and Makovsky over Graversen and Laukannen and it was all over bar the party! (1-5 / 29-61)
